January 2008 Our first meeting for 2008 featured local attorney and historian Seth Grossman as our guest speaker. Seth is also a local radio personality and Acting President of "Liberty and Prosperity". Seth began his presentation with an explanation of the symbolism of the NJ State Flag and how it related to the achievements of our Patriot Ancestors. He then proceeded to relate how those same values lead to the development of the U.S. Navy and its early efforts in the elimination of the Barbary Pirates. He explained how the first American Navy Men, many little more than teenagers, with officers in their early twenties, shocked the standing navies of the world with their unorthodox tactics and bravado.
He concluded his presentation with a recounting of the heroic efforts of Captain Richard Somers, the son of C ol. Richard Somers, in the sinking, by submerged charge, of a pirate vessel in Tripoli Harbor. This action resulting in the loss of his life and the lives of several of his crew. This lead to a discussion of our Chapter's past efforts to have those Heroes' remains returned to America from Libya. Let us not forget that now as then our motto must remain "Millions for defence, not a penny for tribute". Seth is also published weekly in the Current and may be heard on local radio station WIBG 1020 AM. Bill Schmitz, left, presenting a certificate of appreciation to Seth Grossman, Rev. Thomas to right. |
