Dr. Robert E. Cray received his Ph.D. from Stony Brook University in 1984. Temple University Press published his dissertation, Paupers and Poor Relief in New York City and its
Rural Environs, 1700-1830, in 1988. Since that time, while teaching at Montclair State University, Cray has worked on social, religious, and maritime history. His work has appeared in the William & Mary Quarterly, the Journal of the Early Republic, Slavery & Abolition, The Historian, and other academic journals.
Cray was delighted to be by Somers Point, NJ, since his article in The Historian, 2006, was entitled "Remembering Richard Somers: Naval Martyrdom in the Tripolitan War". His current talk on Major John Andre is based on two earlier articles published in the late 1990's exploring the Revolutionary War and public memory.
Dr. Cray has granted his permision to have his presentation presented below.
